Compared to Beerus, God of Destruction, how strong is [Super Saiyan] God?
I suppose if Beerus’ strength is a 10, [Super Saiyan] God would be right about 6. Only, Saiyans rapidly increase in strength as they fight against strong opponents, so the longer they fought, the more that gap would shrink, and it might even be possible for them to eventually turn the tables. Incidentally, I guess Whis would be about a 15.

We always assumed that every statement regarding Saiyans getting stronger while fighting was related to Zenkais, but what about this?

When Goku fought Nappa, he does express how the fight is unfolding fairly evenly, despite holding the power advantage from the start:

Chapter: 226 (DBZ 32), P7.4/P8.1-4
Context after Goku deflects Nappa's mouth blast
Vegeta: “Unbelievable!! To instantly deflect it at that short of a distance!”
Goku: “Phew. If I had taken that one head on, I’d have been in trouble!!”
Nappa: It…It can’t be!!! That was my…my best technique!!! He…He just bounced it off!!”
Goku: “He really is a tough bastard! Even though he should have been hurt a little bit by my Kamehameha!! At this rate this looks like it will take forever...”

The more a Saiyan fights the stronger they get. It's pretty self explanatory. It happened even before Goku was a Saiyan, since Toriyama made Goku get stronger from fighting between the 21st Budokai to the General Blue stuff (Stated by Krillin I believe.)

The way it's worded, though, makes it seem as if he's referring to the fight at hand, not in general.

I always thought it was the Saiyans getting stronger after every fight. Something GT used as an excuse to have their characters getting really strong from something Toriyama used a little bit throughout the series.

But I would like to know why Toriyama would say that about them in this movie when he also mentioned something about them in their prime or closing in on it. What's the deal?

When they arrive in the cave Goku says "I used around 80% [of my power]" then round 2 begins. I see no reason to believe he didn't start to use 100%, especially since Beerus just said he hadn't been using his full power yet, and said "Can you keep up with this speed".

Toriyama is definitely implying that Goku will be getting stronger DURING the fight and not just a zenkai. In fact he's not even implying it, he's flat out stating it.

"Only, Saiyans rapidly increase in strength as they fight against strong opponents, so the longer they fought, the more that gap would shrink"

I just chalk this up to Toriyama being very forgetful of his series while doing interviews. He may have literally misinterpreted what he wrote about zenkais when re-reading his material and figured them to be increases in strength against strong opponents, something akin to the Hulk getting stronger as he gets angrier.

He also forgot about SSj2 while discussing an interview...this is why I don't take his word at all regarding matters and just stick to the in-universe events to explain power differences and not Toriyama's word-as-holy grail.

It's not that Goku started using more power; that much is clear and like you said you see no reason to assume otherwise. What is in question because of Toriyama's statement is Saiyans getting rapidly stronger in battle the longer the fight goes on.

If you try to twist the statement around to say something like "well, Toriyama means that Saiyans use a higher percentage of their power as the fight goes on..." well then I'll just say that's mental tap dancing. Toriyama literally states in absolute terms that they're power is getting stronger, not that they USE more power.

But of course, I hope you're not suggesting that is what Toriyama is meaning...but then why reply to KP's post in that way.

Hmmmmmm

P.S sorry about the double post. I assumed it would be auto-merged but I was wrong. It won't happen again. Newbie move.

I'm just pointing out that "so the longer they fought, the more that gap would shrink" sounds as if he's referring to a specific fight, not over time. Like if Goku fought No.19 over a long period of time, he'd eventually be able to turn the tables because he'd be getting stronger throughout.

That's how it sounds to me, which is completely odd since that's never happened in the manga.

My reply doesn't make sense because it's in the wrong thread lol. There's two threads that were made about this interview and both of them refer to the same quote. So I saw KP's post and thought he was talking in the context of the other thread.

But yeah I believe it's possible for Saiyans to get stronger the longer they fight, it makes sense but no fight really lasts that long, especially not without completely exhausting the fighters.

Oh haha yea I seen the other thread when I hit back after reading this thread. Sorry for the confusion. As for the thread itself, I guess it makes sense that they could but it's just odd because we never see it in the manga like KP said and it isn't really mentioned anywhere by any Saiyan either which is also odd.

As for the Nappa quote; Goku and Nappa were pretty even IIRC until Goku uses the Kaioken. He wanted to save it for Vegeta instead of using it on Nappa so in his mind the fight could take a while considering their power levels weren't that drastically different until he uses the Kaioken when Nappa is about to kill Krillin and Gohan.

Or I may be remembering the fight wrong lol

It was in the original Manga:

Chapter: 257 (DBZ 63), P10.1-2
Context: Vegeta bragging to Dodoria about how he became stronger.
Vegeta: “Fuhahaha…! We Saiyans grow stronger each time we fight…! The stronger the opponent, the stronger we become…So I’m becoming stronger too…! I almost died on Earth, and have now vastly powered up…!”

Note that he actually says "So I'm becoming stronger", likely referring to his fight with Cui and current fight with Dodoria.

Doubt it, since he says "each time we fight", not "each time we almost die". He also said he was "becoming" stronger.

Its impossible that Vegeta refers it to Cui and Dodoria. He flat out says that the stronger opponent , the stronger he will become. Both of them were no match for him.
